Hi guys, because of spoilers I am putting this under a cut
Okay being the geek I am I was excited when I first heard about the Snyder cut of Justice League. Now I liked the 2017 version I could see the problems with it. Joss Wheadon who I love has a different vision when it comes to telling stories to that of Zack Snyder and those visions are completely at odds with each other. Now I am not going into the whole 'who is better DC or Marvel, Snyder or Wheadon. I grew up with both DC and Marvel and I love them equally. As for both Wheadon and Snyder, they are excellent filmmakers but they have a different approach to storytelling and that's not a bad thing-except when it clashes in the same movie. After Snyder left after the tragic death of his daughter Autumn, Joss Wheadon took over and completely changed what the original movie was supposed to be...and it showed. Now I am not saying that Wheadon is the bad guy here though his treatment of Ray Fisher was supposedly quite bad, but you can clearly see where his interpretation clashed with Snyders'.
So this is where the fans wanted the fabled 'Snyder cut'.
So does it live up to the hype...
GOD YES!
Ahem, sorry, got a little carried away there. The Snyder cut is freaking awesome and it has a smooth cohesiveness that makes more sense within the storyline. Character motivation is a lot clearer and there are real backstories with heart, particularly with Cyborg. The Flash (Ezra Miller) isn't quite so unsure of himself and while he does still have some genuinely funny moments, it's not awkward. Batman (Ben Affleck) is brilliant, darker, and with fewer comedic lines but he still has a couple of lines that make you smile, but he is not shooting off Marvelesque quips and for that I thank god. As much as I love the banter in The Avengers etc, it does not suit the Dark Knight and it came across as forced, not natural. The action is exciting, especially the scenes with The Age Of Heroes. The dialog is better and again there is less forced comedy that in the earlier movie, created a tonal shift that was off-putting and brought you out of the action onscreen. The scenes with Steppenwolf, (CiarĂ¡n Hinds) and didn't he get an upgrade, Desaad (Peter Guinness) and Darkseid (Ray Porter) are spot on. I was happy that they got these villains right like Marvel did with Thanos and Loki. (Don't mention the Mandarin, that just pissed me off.) We got a lot more of the Injustice style route of Earth revealing that it's Superman whose grief at the loss of his love Lois Lane is infected/controlled by the anti-life equation and is hell-bent on destroying everything.
We see so much more in this possible time stream and it really works. Seeing Jared Leto's Joker, Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, and Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson / Deathstroke was great and here it works to create more context within the film. The awkward scene with an airbrushed Henry Cavill is gone and replaced with longer scenes with Superman and Lois. The fight scene between Superman and the rest of the Justice League is shorter with more time spent with Superman trying to heal and recall his past in a wonderful scene where he is walking through the Fortress Of Solitude and listening to both his fathers' voices. Jason Momoa and Gil Gadot are of course flawless and given much more to do here.
The movie's tone is more serious and darker but has more meat and heart to the story. Is the four-hour run time worth it? Yes, it is. This is the Justice League that we were meant to have, I think sometimes the fandom needs to speak up so that the writers and studios know what we want from comic book films. I am glad we finally got to see Snyder's final vision, it was worth the wait.
