But what a hassle it was. Because Steve has the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) we decided that it would be better for him to have a motorised mobility scooter. We went to an NDIS funded store and he had a look at several different models. In his funding, he has money to rent one for a while, then he can purchase one through the disability funds. But what a muck about (note a wrote muck without the f, LOL.) First, he was told he had to have an occupational therapist to make sure he can manage the scooter, okay, that's reasonable, then he had to have the store's OT as well. Then he was told that he could hire the scooter for the duration of the funding, about sixteen weeks. Then he was told that he could not use the scooter until the store's OT came out to check on his skill on it. Then he was told that he only had the scooter until Friday where it would be returned to their warehouse. we knew the first week was free, then we assumed that it would roll on. By this time, Steve was getting frustrated and he called his NDIS coordinator who helped to sort with mess out. She called us back and told us that it had been a misunderstanding. In other words, when Steve told the store's OT that he would get a scooter from another store, she hastily walked it all back so they will get the sale.
I never dreamed it would become such a headache. He finally has it though and it is making it much easier for him to get around. Now the big challenge will come when he applies to buy one.
