ladymidathOkay guys, I am one unhappy geek. Because of spoilers I am putting this under a
DC you have just ticked this fangirl off big time...and I mean big time. I was unhappy when the Vertigo title Hellblazer:John Constantine was finally cancelled. DC wanted to bring the blonde haired British mage into the DC universe so that he could be used to his full potential. Okay,l I understand that. A character as good as John Constantine should be at the forefront of any comic series. He is one of the best comic book characters out there.
So now our favourite con man and spell slinger has his own DC series called Constantine. Great, I was excited about it and was looking forward to the first issue.
I have to say the story so far is good, the art work is excellent and they have gotten rid of John's old baggage, (nothing against Epiphany, I rather liked her) and made him younger and less rough around the edges. (John was one of the few comic book character's that actually visibly aged during the series run)
Okay off to a good start. Then the story introduced Sargon the Sorcerer's daughter. Okay a female Sargon. I can deal with that. When it introduced Mr E I was smiling from ear to ear. Mr E of the Trenchcoat Brigade. The Mr E that fought with John Constantine, The Phantom Stranger and Dr Occult to fight the Cult Of The Cold Flame. The Mr E that despises women and has fanatical views that would put a religious zealot to shame. The same Mr E that tried to kill Timothy Hunter to save him from the evils of womanly temptations. Yay, I love this guy.
Only DC has made a few little changes. It seems that Mr E is no longer a crazy obsessed force for good, he is now one of the founders of the Cult Of The Cold Flame. Wait...what?
When the hell did THAT happen?
Oh and he is blind because a spell went wrong and melted his eyes. Wait...what? His father actually blinded him with a sharpened spoon a'la Slumdog Millionaire.
He is working with Sargon's daughter. Wait...what? He hates women. Oh and it seems he no longer wear his cool red tinted shades. WHAT HAPPENED? What the hell is DC doing? WHY WHY WHY?
I love this character and they have completely changed him and it seems, his backstory as well. Mr E would never have founded the Cult Of The Cold Flame, he fought against them and he sure as hell wouldn't be working with a woman. I hate the way DC is screwing around with these well established characters. I can understand some changes sometimes need to be made but this is ridiculous. Instead of taking a well known character and completely changing him, why not just create a new character instead.
Well, that was my rant, I just hope some kind of sanity comes over the people and DC and they restore Mr E back to the lovable old psycho that I know and love. *sigh*
